Art as My Vehicle #5
Quarter of a Century
Learning to Play the Guitar

This piece began after my twenty-fifth birthday. The end product was a short film and, again, the concept for it evolved over time. I set out to learn how to play the guitar in the conventional sense. The idea was to record video of myself learning chords, scales, how to read sheet music and, ultimately, learn and recite others' music. The end piece was going to be a video montage of all the footage I had captured. However, in the process, I developed a new-found confidence in the musical abilities I already possessed. I realized the joy and comfort I had from creating my own sounds, even though they may not consist of traditional chords, notes, and rhythms. The video ends with me playing one of my own songs.
